  • April 1914

  • denied entry and forced to return to Budge Budge

  • The Indian Imperial Police tried to arrest the group leaders. A riot ensued, and they were fired upon by the police, resulting in the deaths of 22 people.

  • 376 passengers

  • 24 were admitted to Canada, but the other 352 were not allowed to disembark in Canada and forced to leave canadian waters

  • Komagata Maru arrived in Calcutta on September 27. Upon entry into the harbour, the ship was stopped by a British gunboat, and the passengers were placed under guard

  • British government saw them as dangerous political agitators

  • Baba Gurdit Singh was arrested  and around 20 other men that they thought were leaders

  • A riot ensued 19 people were killed and some escape but most were imprisoned

legacy:

  • The Indian government erected a memorial to the Komagata Maru martyrs near Budge Budge in 1952, known as the Punjabi Monument. A tripartite agreement was signed for the construction of a building behind the existing memorial, which will house an administrative office, library, museum, and auditorium. The construction will cost a total of 24 million Indian rupees.

Government apologizing:

  • The Conservative government established the community historical recognition programme in 2006 to provide grant and contribution funding for community projects related to wartime measures and immigration restrictions. On June 23, 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper apologised for the head tax imposed on Chinese immigrants.

  • Prime Minister Harper acknowledged the Komagata Maru incident and pledged to consult with the Indo-Canadian community on how to recognise it. Ruby Dhalla, MP for Brampto Springdale, tabled a motion in the House of Commons calling for the government to apologise to the community and individuals impacted by the incident.

Significance:

  • The Komagata Maru incident was used by Indian groups to highlight inconsistencies in Canadian immigration laws. The Ghadar Party, an Indian revolutionary organisation, used the incident's inflamed passions to rally support for its goals. Prominent Ghadarites such as Barkatullah, Tarak Nath Das, and Sohan Singh used the incident as a rallying point to recruit members for the movement, but their efforts were thwarted due to a lack of public support.

Thomas "How will I get all these goods to the other side of Canada? The journey will take months by horse and carriage, and it's not safe. I need a faster way to transport my goods."

Pauses  THINKS AND SAYS

"I have an idea," "We will build a railway from one end of Canada to the other. This will not only solve the transportation problem, but it will also unite Canada and promote economic growth."

John A Macdonald is determined. "We will call it the Canadian Pacific Railway, and it will be the greatest engineering feat in Canadian history."

scene 2

(nick), a respected member of the community, "Do you guys think if we should sign it or not because even though we need to move away to a different place the government still promised us resources "

tyrone "Why would they promise us resources if they just wanted our land?"

"They wanted us to move to a worse land, to make way for their railway. They promised us resources to make up for it, so that’s alright

tyrone) nods in agreement. "They thought we wouldn't notice, but we did. They need our land for their railway, but they don't want to compensate us fairly."

. "What can we do about it?"

Nick "We can fight back. We can demand that they fulfill their promises and compensate us for our land. We won't let them take advantage of us."

(tyrone) nods again. "We'll gather our people and make our voices heard. We won't let them forget that they made promises to us, and they need to keep them."

The group continues to discuss their plan of action, determined to hold the government accountable for their broken promises.

"They promised us resources if we agreed to move to this new land, but we never received them. It's not right."

nick) sighs. "We were forced to give up our land and our way of life for the benefit of the government and the railway company. And we were never properly compensated." flashback

looks around the group. "We need to do something about this. We can't just sit here and let them get away with what they did to us."

tyrone. "We can demand reparations. We can make our voices heard and demand justice for what was taken from us."

nick. "We can gather our people and make a plan. We won't let them forget what they did to us, and we won't rest until we receive the reparations we deserve."
